Many different file types are used on the Web. To aid monitoring the information that users have requested, the file types have been divided into six groups. Each of these file types has a default list of file extensions that are applicable to the file type, as shown in the table below. You can apply the same monitoring rule to all file types, or you can apply an individual rule to each file type.
You may wish to apply a monitoring rule to a file type to exclude data that you are not interested in. For example, a Web page is often comprised of numerous small image files that make up the frames/background and transparent spacing elements. These image files are often less than 5KB, whereas photographic images are generally at least 20KB. By applying a rule to Images to ignore files less than 5KB, you prevent all the background and spacer images less than 5KB being recorded and only record images that are likely to be of interest to you.

We recommend that you regularly review the lists of file extensions. As new file extensions become available and widely used, you should update the lists of file extensions.
