Adding a file rule

You can set a rule that allows or does not allow a specified file to be run.

To add a file rule

  1. From the left-hand pane, expand Picture of the Software icon Software and choose Picture of the Software Restriction Policies icon Software Restriction Policies.

  2. From the right-hand pane, choose File Rules.

  3. Click the Add button.

  4. Click the Browse button to locate the file you want to add to the rule.

  5. Select the file and click Open.

  6. Type a meaningful description for the new rule.

  7. From the Rule drop-down list, select the rule to be applied to the specified file.

  8. Click OK. The file is listed in the right-hand pane.

  9. You can add more file rules by repeating from Step 3.

  10. To commit your changes, click Save. Alternatively, to remove all your changes since the last time you saved, click the Revert button, then click Yes.

Notes

  • File rules that allow access are listed with the Picture of the Allowed File icon icon, and file rules that do not allow access are listed with the Picture of the Disallowed File icon icon.

  • You can allow a user to run all of the files in a folder or prevent them from doing so by adding a path rule. See Related Topics.

  • Alternatively, to allow or prevent a user running all the files in a specified directory, add a path rule. See Related Topics.

  • When necessary, any user policy can be exempted from software restriction policies. When you edit the properties of the user policy, in the Software Restrictions category, ensure the 'Exempt from Software Restriction Policies' setting is ticked.
