Assigning packages or products to a computer

You can assign one or more packages to individual computers, or a group of computers. For example, you might want to assign several required packages to a new staff member's laptop, or a product update to all the computers which have previously installed that product.

When you assign a package or product to a computer, it is installed on the selected computer in the background.

After you have selected the package(s) or product(s) to be assigned, you can also use the Assign Packages window to add further packages to the assignment list, or remove packages from the list. When the 'Automatically manage...' box is clear, you can re-order the list.

Before you assign a package to a large number of computers, and especially before assigning an MS-DOS or 16-bit program, we recommend that you assign and test it first on a single computer to check for compatibility and ensure there are no problems before assigning it to other computers.

To select packages or products for assignment

  1. From the left-hand pane, expand Picture of the Software icon Software, then expand Picture of the Packages & Products icon Packages & Products.

  2. Choose All Packages, or All Products.

  3. From the right-hand pane, right-click the package or product and from the menu, choose Assign.

  4. If you want to add more packages or products to the assignment list:

  5. To remove a package or product from the Packages and Products list, select the package or product and click the Remove button.

To select target computers for the packages or products

  1. Under 'Target computers', click the Add button.

  2. In the 'Select items to add' tree view, choose Computers, All Computers.

  3. From the 'Available items' list, select the computers you want to assign the package to.

  4. When you have selected all required computers, click the OK button.

  5. Click OK.

Notes

  • You can assign packages to computers from the RM Management Console Start page. Click the Software icon Picture of the Start page Software icon and from the list of tasks, select 'Assign a package to computers'.

  • You can also assign selected packages from the Tasks menu by choosing Package, Assign.

  • After you have assigned a package to a computer, you can create a program set to make the program shortcuts available to users. For more information, see Program Sets Help for more information.

  • If a user intends to use their computer off the network, they will need to run assigned programs for the first time while they are connected to the network in order to set up user-specific information. If a user attempts to run a program for the first time while disconnected, they may experience problems.
